Buyers Beware: The Truth About Greenwashing

Buyers Beware: The Truth About Greenwashing

What is Greenwashing you might ask? Greenwashing is the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product of service.

These days more and more consumers are concerned with the environment.  For many, that means purchasing products labeled as “all natural”, “green”, “non-toxic”, or “organic”. But what consumers don’t realize is that some “green” products really aren’t so green.

Are companies misleading consumers with deceptive advertising?  It’s common to walk through a store and see products decorated with pictures of leaves, trees, and green packaging, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they have any environmental benefit.

Nature pictures and ambiguous words lure customers into purchasing their products on the pretense that they will not harm the environment.  However, their words are meaningless and are not tied to standards or independent guidelines.  In order for a product to be deemed “green”, it needs to be certified by an independent third party such as Ecologo or Green Seal.

In a 2008-2009 survey done by a Canadian consulting company, Terrachoice, more than 4,000 products were surveyed.  According to the study, over 95% of products were misleading consumers with false information.

So, what are the seven sins of greenwashing?

1. False Labels (the fabrication of third party endorsements)

  1.  No proof (the lack of substantial information or third party certification)
  2. Vagueness (unclear environmental claims which confuse the customer)
  3. Fibbing (fabrication or lying)
  4. Irrelevance (Insignificant environmental claims)
  5. Hidden trade off (The concealment of not so green business)
  6. The lesser of two evils
